Over the course of 2020 and 2021, the world was irreversibly changed by a massive international public health crisis. The covid-19 pandemic brought about an economic depression similar to the Great Depression of the 1930s. The pandemic has disrupted economies and societies and exacerbated the gap between the rich and the poor.

The 2021 issue of the multinational corporations (MNC) Trends Report endeavours to make sense of these effects in twelve sectors in the South African economic landscape, including retail, mining, banking and more. By monitoring over 80 companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock exchange, we are able to gain some insight into the longer-term effects and trends of the pandemic and the economic breakdown.

The South African Multinational Corporations Database

In 2021, the LRS gave the Multinational Corporations (MNC) Database a facelift. The MNC database monitors the finances and executive pay of over 80 JSE-listed companies across 14 sectors, including Shoprite (in the retail sector) and Sibanye Gold (in the mining sector).

You can choose from company reports, country reports or sector reports. The reports have easily consumable financial information. Take a look at how the CEO of the company was paid, monitor profits and benchmark against other companies in the same sector.
